A total of 445,221 people died from asbestos in the U.S. from 1999 to 2015, according to a new study by CDC.
The report says that the occurrence of mesothelioma deaths has increased, particularly among younger populations, at a greater rate than previously projected. Furthermore, the number of people dying from asbestos in the U.S. is increasing, particularly those older than 85 years old. CDC says this most likely represents exposure from many years ago.
“However,” CDC says, “although malignant mesothelioma deaths decreased in persons age 35 to 64 years, the continuing occurrence of mesothelioma deaths among persons age less than 55 years suggests ongoing occupational and environmental exposures to asbestos fibers and other causative EMPS, despite regulatory actions by OSHA and EPA aimed at limiting asbestos exposure.”
